Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacturing

A work placement at Mayes and Warwick has helped Brett carve out a career in engineering, as he is now an apprentice for the manufacturing firm.

The 17-year-old entered the world of work through a one-week placement arranged by Walsall College, which was part of his Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacturing course.

“The placement was great – I was able to put what I had learned from my course into an actual work environment, while picking up new skills as well. I was shown how to set up the machines and make flat thread rolling dies.

Following work experience, my manager Peter was happy with my performance and told me that once I finish my course, he would invite me to an interview.”

After Brett completed his course, which also included maths and English, he approached Mayes and Warwick again, who agreed to see him.

“The knowledge I gained from my course and the work placement was of huge help during my interview. I got a call from Peter a few days later and I was offered the apprenticeship.

I’m learning new skills on the job, whilst simultaneously learning the theoretical side of things, allowing for a good balance of experience and knowledge.”

Brett accredits his time at Walsall College for helping him kick-start his career at Mayes and Warwick.

“Work experience, which was part of my course, allowed me to work at this company for the week. I was able to show my abilities during my placement, which in turn helped me progress to the apprenticeship,” he said.

The driven apprentice plans to become a fully qualified engineer.

“My career aims involve becoming an engineer at Level 3 or higher and be trained fully on CNC machines and CADCAM. My apprenticeship has ensured I am going in the right direction to eventually reach my aims.”

Peter Lawrence, Managing Director at Mayes and Warwick, said: “Brett is an enthusiastic new addition to our team. He conducts himself professionally at all times, and his attendance and punctuality is outstanding. He is motivated and always keen to learn, demonstrating new skills that makes him an ideal candidate.

As we are a small company, it’s vital that we find bright people for our apprenticeship vacancies, which is why we are working with Walsall College, as they ensure that their students have a good level of maths and English skills for their placements.”

Work placement opportunities benefit both students and employers. It gives students a chance to apply their skills and knowledge in a real-life work environment, whilst enabling employers to find new talent.
